So I glazed these bad boys in a beautiful matte blue with brown undertones to pick up my carvings.

They came out shiny and pink! 🤯🤯🤯

It took a little while to figure out. I fire at a community studio and apparently sometimes the wrong glaze bin top ends up with an unmatched bottom. The color is written on top so that’s the only place I looked. Next time I’ll check the bin itself with the glaze sample. I’m actually shocked this hasn’t happened to me before but it’s on my radar now. Grateful I only glazed 4 mugs that way.

Super happy with how all of these turned out!!! Yay. Everyone at the studio is tired of my complaining about all my problems with the porcelain - I can’t blame them. I’ve complained a lot and talked it thru a million times and tried everything I know and still I was struggling. So I took a break and made a bunch of stuff out of ole faithful white grog stoneware clay and success! I really love every single piece. Yay!

So I met this amazing vendor @marymetzgr at the last market I participated in. She had the tent next to me and we spent two days together so u know we ended up chatting it up pretty good. She’s this amazing artist and we got to talking about her process which got me thinking about my process. I love throwing on the wheel but I’ve discovered that my favorite part is carving and that usually requires some drawing.

Anyway, long story short, she turned me onto the Procreate App. So I bought myself an iPad and pencil this Xmas and started experimenting. I love the idea of drawing out my images first so I can see what they actually look like before I carve them out of the clay.

Anyway, I’ve been having a fun time playing around with it. Here I came up with some moth designs. This one in particular I probably played around for a good 45 minutes but they have a fast replay so u can see your process which is fun too. Finally, I slab rolled some plates, cut out the moth shape and then added my design. I’m going to keep playing with it and see where it goes.

Playing around with a new clay body. Or I should say revisiting this one. The brown speckled clay is so warm and inviting and I love how the speckles show through the glaze. I think I’m going to try some more designs on this one and see how they go. 🤞

New stuff out of the latest cone 10 firing and surprise surprise I’m actually really happy with them. I love the muted blue with brown undertones. The purple is not what I expected with my glaze combo and honestly is really not my jam but I still think the little cups are adorable and figure someone will like them. I think I’m going to actually make some more goodies for that kiln and do some more experimenting.

These little vases are all fresh out of the kiln. The best part is the little necks keep these porcelain guys from warping so I get to carve away and do whatever I want without having to worry about that bit. Such cuties.

Oh Lordy. This is why my “test tiles” are always actual real stuff. I loved the look of the red clay slip on my porcelain when I made a little tiny plate. But put it on a big ole’ mug and yea, this is not my jam. So, glad I gave it a go and now I can move on.
